Sometimes WE meet a family and when we leave, WE just think, "WOW!" This was one of those families. I arrived at their home at 8:30 in the morning exactly. Typically, someone in the family isn't happy to be up so early, but judging by the way they greeted me at the door with excitement and enthusiasm, I knew this family was a class act! The daughters were smiling, the son was more serious (but still very respectful) and the parents were also a pleasure to meet.
As I began to photograph their family, we had a couple of challenges: the brightest sun I've ever seen in Belgium and I had an allergic reaction to their dog (not to worry, my list of allergies goes on and on!:) I hadn't been around a dog in a while, so I had a little trouble breathing – but nothing that couldn't be cured by a little fresh air and a glass of water! What I loved most about this family is that they never complained - indoors, outdoors, constant changes in lighting, temperature, etc. Despite our small challenges, I got to know quite an adventurous and admirable family!
I mentioned how adaptive the family was – it was no surprise to learn that the husband is in the US Diplomatic Service and that their family has moved 10 different times! That explains why it was clear that their children could thrive in just about any environment. Their son is a lieutenant in the US Army. He graduated from the US Air Force Academy and was one of very few that was granted permission by the Pentagon to cross-commission into the Army. He is also ranger qualified. The oldest daughter is an Anthropology Major at a US university and their youngest daughter is a high school senior here in Belgium!
Getting to spend time with this family was an honor. Their son was fighting in Afghanistan last year; their daughter had been in Nepal (South Asia); and the year before the son went off to Afghanistan, the husband was in Kabul, Afghanistan. With such a short window of having the whole family in one place, Wendy and I were so pleased that they reached out to us and WE could get them on our schedule!
Thanks to this wonderful family for allowing WE photography to spend a little time getting to know your family. The pleasure was all ours...
